Can new 3G iPhone be UNLOCKED?

The new Apple 3G iPhone, days away from release, is set to be the next best thing. When the original iPhone came out in the US, hackers got busy, successfully unlocking the iPhone and freeing customer from their chosen networks. This created a black market overseas, with enthusiasts all around the globe buying 'unlocked iphones' so they could use their iphone on whatever network they wanted, whereever they wanted.

With the 3G iPhone, some believe it won't be unlockable, to the benefit of Apple the Telco's who will carry it - such as Optus, Vodafone, & Telstra in Australia. These carriers will require you to sign up on a expensive 24-month contract at time of purchase, where the shops will then activate the 3G iPhone so it can be used. The 3G iPhone will be locked to that SIM card that is used when the iPhone is activated in store.

Whilst this may be true in some cases, we doubt it will be the general blanket rule. Vodafone and Optus have already made mention of Pre-Paid iPhones, which could be purchased outright, without the heavy weight of a 24 month contact. These iPhones will still be locked to the particular pre-paid SIM card, much like other pre-paid phones are today. But, don't worry. In time (two to three months we predict) Hackers will figure out a way to unlock these prepaid phones, so they can be used on any network.

Whilst the telco's don't like this - as they loose revenue by not locking people into contracts - they should learn to embrace this consumer behavior. Nobody likes to be locked into anything (just look at divorce rates!). We all desire freedom, and the power to choose our own mobile plans. Lets hope they figure this out sooner, rather then later!
